Aloha and thank you for visiting Soul Surfing Maui.
My name is Brian DeCook, I am the founder of Soul Surfing Maui and I have been teaching surfing professionally here on Maui for the past 15 years. This surf company is the result of my dream to surf my life away while turning new friends on to the coolest sport in the world!
I was born and raised on the sea. My Grandmother taught me how to swim in the ocean at age four, and by age seven my older brother was coaching me into my first wave on Dad's old long board. From the moment my feet hit my board I was hooked! Riding waves became the focal point of my life and for the next 15 years I surfed as much as I could after school, during school and on the weekends. I had found what personified me and it was surfing.
Surfing was my life! . At age 18, and only two weeks out of high school, I decided I wanted to surf around the world. So I boarded a flight to South-East Asia with only a camera, surfboard and backpack to my name. This was the smartest move I ever made! Traveling the world opened my eyes to different cultures, kind- hearted people and perfect waves I never dreamed existed. I was truly blown away by this experience! During that first trip I was fortunate to meet and teach some local Philippino kids how to paddle out and surf the perfect waves they had right there in front of the village. Until this moment they had no idea the treasure they had right there in front of them. Many of the local people gathered, because they had never seen or heard of surfing before . They all just flipped out! The whole village put down their hammers to come and watch as I pushed the kids into wave after wave. The on-lookers cheered, and for me, an everlasting connection was made. The stoke for me was like nothing I had experienced before. I loved turning people on to surfing, and this is how I came to spend my time in the years to come. Life was great! While discovering exotic breaks and meeting awesome people from all walks of life, I started to have a vision of the future.
After about five years of traveling and surfing around the world with little more than a surfboard to my name, I decided to go into business. I wanted to create something positive and I wanted to inspire people to follow their own dreams. I had no business experience, but I knew what I wanted to do. My plan was to make my 
living teaching surfing, and share my world experiences with others. So in 1993 I started SOUL SURFING MAUI. It was a true Learn By Doing/Business 101 adventure. I found I had a knack for communicating with others, quickly learning how to successfully instruct surfers of all skill levels and subsequently market and manage my little dream. Luckily my timing was right, and my new venture was more successful than I had dreamed was possible. Many of my guests have come to be good friends over the last 15 years and choose to return and surf with us year after year. They say it's surfing with us that brings them back. To me this is more than a compliment - it's the reason I went into business!
